Aspen is here! We are SO lucky to have her in our lives. She is such a fun and sweet baby and we have absolutely loved our first week as parents. I wanted to write our experience down so that I won't forget the details.
It all started on Sunday, June 2. I started having regular contractions that "hurt" and they lasted for about two hours and we decided to head off for the hospital. (I say "hurt" because I had NO IDEA what I was in for later.) We were so excited to finally meet our little one! So, after 6 hours in the hospital and only 1 cm of progress, they asked us if we wanted to go home or have my water broken. I decided it would be better for my body to decide when I went into labor, so we went home. It was very sad and hard but I assumed she'd be coming any time.
Here is a picture of the "dry run"
Just a quick note about the first hospital visit. At first it kind of felt like a failure because we went in and came home with no baby. But, through the next few days we realized it was a really good learning experience for us. It helped Billie and I to prepare better for the real thing.
Needless to say, the next week after the hospital visit was a tough one for me. I continued to have contractions on and off (emphasis on the ON) for the entire week. Every day I wondered if this was going to be the day and if these contractions meant I was truly in labor. Not to mention the fact that hormones get a little crazy and this time of the pregnancy and I was a little bit of a mess. I just wanted Aspen to be here and I wanted my body to either be in real labor or not. No more of this in between thing!
Finally on the following Saturday afternoon, the contractions got stronger and stronger. Had to stop what I was doing, close my eyes, breathe through it kind of thing. This continued through the night and into the morning on Sunday June 10. I had been planning for a natural birth and was told it was best to stay at home for as long as possible before coming into the hospital. So I tried to be patient and wait and see if this was the real thing. When the contractions were about 2 minutes apart we knew (thought) this was the real thing! So we jumped in the car and got to the hospital at around 12:30pm.
I was dilated to a 5. I thought sarcastically, "Okay good, at least this is about halfway there. Maybe I only have another week left!!"
I was deep in labor land. I literally felt drugged and a little out of my mind, but so deep in my mind at the same time (if that makes any sense!). I could hardly open my eyes or respond to anyone around me. I was completely aware of Billie, the nurse, etc. but I was so focused and zoned in on myself and the baby. It was a crazy feeling!
Three intense, unmedicated hours later, I had only dilated to a 6. I was so discouraged and felt like there was no way I could do this. Luckily I have the greatest husband in the world who reassured me that I was strong and was doing great. He was so amazingly reassuring and loving throughout this whole experience. From there, I progressed really quickly 7, 8, 9...and time to push!
Everyone always says you KNOW when it's time to push. I never really had that urge, but when the midwife asked me if I was wanting to push I said yes because it sounded a whole lot better than just trying to "breathe" through the contractions. (More like attempt to not hyperventilate. My face went completely numb at one point from all the "breathing".) The shift change happens at 7:00pm so the nurse told me she wanted me to try to get her here before she had to leave. That kind of made me laugh in my crazy state but it lightened the mood. After 1/2 hour of pushing and about 10 minutes of decelerated baby heart rate, oxygen mask, and more and more nurses and doctors coming into the room, she was HERE!! Born at 6:26pm on June 10, 2012. 6 hours in the hospital the first time was a LITTLE different than the 6 hours in the hospital the second time.
She cried only for a few seconds when she came out and then they laid her right on my chest. It was an amazing rush of emotions!
They let me hold her for as long as I wanted and Billie got to cut the cord. She even got to have her first feeding within minutes of being born and was already a champ at it.
Gretchen, our midwife, was AMAZING!
A very proud and sweet daddy.
Taking care of my screaming self was hard work. Billie was rewarded with hot wing pizza from The Pie. His favorite!
My dad and step mom and sister were all able to greet baby Aspen just hours after she was born.
Aspen's first bath!
Still on that after-birth high. Look at her cute face!!
She is well worth the wait!
